June 2026 Black and White
The submissions for our June Photo Challenge absolutely blew us away. The theme was Black and White, and you all took to the streets to capture the raw, gritty, and beautifully candid moments of daily life. From striking reflections in hidden alleyways to powerful silhouettes against urban backdrops, the monochrome entries brought incredible depth and contrast.
Out of all the incredible submissions, five photos stood out to our judges for their exceptional storytelling and composition. But there was one shot that captured the perfect, humorous spirit of street photography.
Please join us in giving a massive round of applause to our June winner:
Ellen Hui
The Winning Shot
Take a look at Ellen’s incredible winning photograph:Why We Loved It:
Ellen’s capture is a masterclass in street juxtaposition. The timing is immaculate—catching a passerby mid-stride right next to a massive, expressive piece of cartoon graffiti that looks like it’s shouting directly at him. Combined with the textured wall and the quiet, candid moment of a couple tucked into the doorway background, it tells a brilliant, multi-layered story of city life.
The Top 5 Selected Photos
The competition was incredibly tight this month. Here are the five remarkable photographers and pieces that made our final selection, each showcasing a unique perspective on black and white street life:
Ellen Hui – Our June Challenge Winner! A perfectly timed, humorous look at the interactions between people and the street art around them.
Chia Woon Kon – A stunning, symmetrical exploration of a graffiti-lined alleyway, beautifully capturing reflections and the bustle of pedestrians.
Harun Wahab – A powerful high-contrast shot featuring a crisp silhouette moving past a towering corporate billboard, creating a brilliant thematic contrast.
Joanne Chew – A moody, geometric study of light and shadow, capturing a lone figure framed through a harsh accordion security gate.
Yuen Yee – An impactful documentary-style shot contrasting a vibrant “Visit Malaysia” street mural with the quiet, everyday realities of the people beside it.
Thank You!
We want to send a huge thank you to everyone who participated this month. Stripping away color forces a photographer to rely entirely on light, shadow, texture, and timing—and you all rose to the occasion beautifully.
Stay tuned—our next monthly photo challenge announcement is just around the corner!
Keep your lenses ready, keep exploring the streets, and congratulations once again to Ellen and all our finalists!
A big thank you to everyone who participated in this month’s challenges. Your dedication and creativity continue to inspire the club.
